What are health disparities? Health disparities
are defined as “a population-specific difference in the presence
of disease, health outcomes, or access to care” (US Health
Resources & Services Administration).
A recent report from the highly regarded National Academy of Sciences’
Institute of Medicine (IOM), entitled Unequal Treatment: Confronting
Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Healthcare, found overwhelming
evidence that minorities in America generally receive poorer health
care than Whites, even when income, insurance and medical conditions
are similar. This comprehensive report found that this inequality
has contributed to higher minority death rates and other health
complications from a host of chronic conditions. <more>

Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is dedicated to protecting

research, deploying its knowledge and expertise in the field, and
educating tomorrow's scientists and practitioners in the global

The Morgan State University Public Health Program was developed with the recognition that
the quality of life for many urban dwellers is diminishing as a result
of environmental and social forces which place them at increased risk
of disease, disability, premature death, and other long-standing public
health problems. This program is a seamless degree program that takes a
student from the bachelor degree level to the DrPH in four years.
The Center for Health Disparities Solutions is dedicated to the elimination of disparities in health and health care among racial and ethnic populations, socioeconomic groups, and geopolitical categories such as urban, rural, and suburban populations. The Center conducts multidisciplinary basic and translational research with the goals of advancing knowledge on the causes of health disparities and developing interventions to eliminate disparities.
The center is a collaboration between Johns Hopkins and Morgan State Universities, combining the facilities of the two Baltimore-based campuses.
