What are health disparities? Health disparities are defined as “a population-specific difference in the presence of disease, health outcomes, or access to care” (US Health Resources & Services Administration).

A recent report from the highly regarded National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine (IOM), entitled Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Healthcare, found overwhelming evidence that minorities in America generally receive poorer health care than Whites, even when income, insurance and medical conditions are similar. This comprehensive report found that this inequality has contributed to higher minority death rates and other health complications from a host of chronic conditions. <more>
